      Our book is not a history of cartography, and it’s not an academic work on cartography. We like to think of it as a book of stories that happen to be .   It goes over how to read the basic terrain features shown on contour lines on a typical topographical map. It shows ridges and valleys as well as peaks and depressions, and cliffs.

To read a map, start by looking at the compass rose on the top of the map to make sure you are holding the map correctly. The top of the map should be North. Then, determine what direction you are facing by using a compass or your GPS. Once you are oriented, circle where you are and where you'd like to go on the map%().
